The pomp, the glamour, the conflicts, the characters: When it comes to Britain's royal family, Americans can't seem to get enough. That was evident this week following the announcement of King Charles III's treatment for cancer. They're references for power and prestige, like Aretha Franklin as the “Queen of Soul” or the administration of John F. Kennedy as Camelot. There was a social and cultural element as well: In the 19th century, some rich Americans would find husbands for their daughters among the British aristocracy. And of course, the 20th century has plenty of examples of music, television, etc., that traveled between the two societies.

LONDON (AP) — The news of King Charles III's cancer diagnosis has refocused attention on the responsibilities of Britain's monarch and revived a central question about the country's centuries-old system of government: What does the king actually do? Under Britain’s constitutional monarchy, the king is head of state but must remain politically neutral and leave policy-making to the elected Parliament. Another of the monarch's visible duties as head of state is hosting world leaders during their visits to the U.K. Charles is also head of the Commonwealth, a loose association of 56 countries, most of them former British colonies or once under British rule. ___Find more of AP’s coverage of King Charles III at https://apnews.com/hub/royalty

LONDON, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Britain's King Charles celebrates his 75th birthday on Tuesday and will use the occasion to launch a new scheme to tackle food poverty and cut down on waste. The king, who has spent more than five decades as an outspoken campaigner on environmental issues and supporter of a sustainable economy, will officially launch the 'Coronation Food Project', his mission to try to stop people going hungry. With his wife, Queen Camilla, Charles will spend his birthday visiting a surplus food distribution centre. He will meet major British supermarkets to see how his project can help redistribute food which would otherwise go to waste. The project says 14 million people in Britain face food insecurity, and as the rising cost of living has pushed even more into food poverty, charities say there has been a 38% rise in those using food banks for the first time in the year to March 2023.

Pop singer Katy Perry lost a 15-year trademark battle with a clothing designer named Katie Perry. The "Teenage Dream" singer partially infringed the trademark of the designer's business. "This is a tale of two women, two teenage dreams and one name," the judge said in her ruling. The trademark battle spanned 15 years as the performer attempted to block the designer from registering the trademark and sought to stop her using it before dropping the move, Katie Perry claimed. The clothing designer registered her brand name Katie Perry in 2008, a year after she started selling clothes under that name.
